In a letter to the editor published in the May 27 New York Times, SIWPS Member and frequent media contributor Stuart Gottlieb asserts that ISIS remains a substantial threat to the West and argues that it is a mistake to underplay the group’s efforts. Gottlieb highlights the failings of current American policy in the Sunni Arab provinces and stresses the need for more direct involvement.

The letter is a response to Ahmed Ali’s May 22nd New York Times Op-Ed, “Calm Down. ISIS Isn’t Winning.”
