The Arnold A. Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies proudly presents Dr. Paul Staniland, Professor of Political Science from the University of Chicago as part of their year long Security Speaker Series.

Paul Staniland’s research focuses on insurgency and ethnic conflict, particularly in South Asia. His dissertation studied the origins of cohesion and factionalization in insurgent organizations. He has done field research in India, Sri Lanka, and Northern Ireland, and has published in Civil Wars, Comparative Political Studies, International Security, Security Studies, and the Washington Quarterly, among others. His research has been funded by the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation, Smith Richardson Foundation, MIT Center for International Studies, Yale University’s MacMillan Center, Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, and Minda de Gunzberg Center for European Studies.

Staniland’s recent professional activities include service on the admissions committee of the Department of Political Science (2010-11) and the steering committee of the Standing Group on Extremism and Democracy, European Consortium for Political Research (2008-present). He is a manuscript reviewer for International Security and Security Studies and was a rapporteur for the Workshop on India and the Persian Gulf, MIT Center for International Studies Persian Gulf Initiative, in 2007.

He received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2010 and his BA in political science from the University of Chicago in 2004.
