Daniel B. Prieto is a Strategic Executive for Google Cloud, Public Sector, where he leads strategy development, policy initiatives, and thought leadership to grow Google’s government business. Before coming to Google, Prieto served as an external Senior Advisor to McKinsey & Co., providing strategic advice to clients in the areas of enterprise risk, IT and cybersecurity. From 2013 to 2017, Prieto served as a Senior Executive in the Obama Administration, first as the Chief Technology Officer in the office of the Department of Defense CIO, and then as Director for Cybersecurity Policy on the National Security Council Staff in the White House. In those roles, he led the DoD’s cybersecurity information sharing program with private sector defense partners, helped lead the response to the Office of Personnel Management data breach, designed and implemented the first-ever government-wide prioritization of IT “crown jewels,” worked closely with the Intelligence Community on insider threat programs, and contributed to a number of Executive Orders and Presidential Directives on IT modernization, cybersecurity incident response and information sharing, and the creation of the Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center. Prieto has also been a Vice President at IBM and helped stand up the Committee on Homeland Security in the U.S. House of Representatives. As an executive at AOL and an investment Banker at J.P. Morgan, he served as a strategist or advisor on over $150B in transactions in technology, media and aerospace & defense, including the mergers of America Online and Time Warner, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas, and the acquisition of Netscape. He has held fellowship appointments at Harvard University, Stanford University, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He is a former trustee of Wesleyan University and a member of the Aspen Homeland Security Group, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Cosmos Club, and the National Academy of Sciences’ Committee on Law and Justice. Prieto has testified before the U.S. Senate and his writing and commentary have appeared widely, including in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Foreign Policy, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Baltimore Sun, Denver Post, Huffington Post, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, CNN, FOX News, National Public Radio, ABC Radio, and Al-Jazeera America. He has published book chapters and major reports with the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Bar Association, IBM, the Markle Foundation, the Century Foundation, and Cambridge University Press.
