The Institute welcomes Jean-Marie Guéhenno as our new Arnold A. Saltzman Professor of Professional Practice in International and Public Affairs.  He will teach a course entitled “Peace Operations in Fragile States” at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. 

As Under-Secretary-General for peacekeeping operations from 2000 to 2008, Guéhenno became the longest serving head of peacekeeping and leader of the largest peacekeeping expansion in the history of the United Nations.  Guéhenno has been at the forefront of efforts to address the conflicts of Africa, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Darfur, as well as the new strategic challenges, from Afghanistan to Kosovo and Georgia.  He is currently involved in several projects related to human rights, good governance, and security, advising governments as well as international organizations and non-governmental organizations.  Guéhenno is working with the Open Society Institute on the Democratic Republic of the Congo, advising the World Bank on post-conflict strategies and fragile states.  He is also advising on international security issues in the context of the Global Redesign Initiative of the World Economic Forum.  Guéhenno currently serves as the Chairperson of the Advisory Board of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), is a member of the board of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Geneva, and is a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution.
