Institute Affiliate Roy Licklider Has Passed Away
The Institute shares the sad news that Affiliate Roy Licklider passed away on November 11, 2022. Roy was a Professor of Political Science Emeritus at Rutgers University, a Senior Research Scholar at the Saltzman Institute, and he also taught courses in the Department of Political Science at Columbia University for many years.
Roy was a pioneer in the empirical study of civil wars with his influential monograph, Stopping the Killing: How Civil Wars End (NYU Press, 1993), and “The Consequences of Negotiated Settlements in Civil Wars, 1945-1993,” American Political Science Review, 89 (September, 1995), pp. 681-690, which set the agenda for the torrent of research on civil wars which followed. Roy was a major contributor to the Saltzman community as a teacher, scholar, and active participant in our faculty seminars, where his insightful and delightfully acerbic wit could always be counted on to liven up our proceedings.
A memorial service was held at Riverside Memorial Chapel on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2022. We will miss our friend and colleague.
